John Mayer Cancels Tour After Throat Condition Returns

John Mayer performs in Mountain View, California. John Mayer performs in Mountain View, California.

John Mayer has been forced to take an indefinite break from live performance after learning that a granuloma on his vocal cords has grown back after doctors believed it had healed. The singer went to the doctor after noticing that something about his voice wasn't quite right in rehearsal on Tuesday. "This is bad news," Mayer wrote on his Tumblr this morning. "Though there will be a day when all of this will be behind me, it will sideline me for a longer period of time than I care to have you count down."

The singer says that his new album Born and Raised, which had been delayed by his throat ailment, will be released on May 22nd as scheduled, and in the meantime he will begin work on writing new songs. "I feel really vibrant as a writer at the moment and there’s no reason not to begin the next album project in the time I would have been touring," says Mayer. "Somewhere in all of this is another surgery and a very long chemically-imposed period of silence, so I hope you’ll understand that I have to really pick that date carefully.

"I’m pretty emotionally burnt out at the moment, but please know how hard I tried to resolve this and how disappointed I am that I can’t perform this record yet," Mayer added.

John Mayer Reveals 'Born and Raised' Track Listing

John Mayer performs during Tiger Jam 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. John Mayer performs during Tiger Jam 2011 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

John Mayer is set to release Born and Raised, his fifth studio solo album, on May 22nd. The songwriter produced the record with Don Was, who previously helmed albums by Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King and the Rolling Stones. David Crosby and Graham Nash contributed guest vocals on the title track and session keyboard man Chuck Leavell – best known for his work with Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers Band and the Stones – is featured throughout the set.

Mayer was forced to delay the completion of Born and Raised while he recovered from severe vocal cord issues late last year. The record, which was largely finished before he was allowed to record vocals, marks a new direction for the singer-songwriter. "I think it's gonna be more oganic, more natural lyrics and chords and artful simplicity," Mayer recently told Rolling Stone of the new tunes.

You can stream "Shadow Days," the album's country-tinged lead single, and check out the track listing for Born and Raised below.

"Queen of California"
"The Age of Worry"
"Shadow Days"
"Speak for Me"
"Something Like Olivia"
"Born and Raised"
"If I Ever Get Around to Living"
"Love Is a Verb"
"Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967"
"Whiskey, Whiskey, Whiskey"
"A Face to Call Home"

John Mayer Teases New Song on Tumblr

John Mayer performs during the Tiger Jam All Star Benefit Concert at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The wait is nearly over for John Mayer fans. Today the singer-songwriter released a snippet of a new single, "Shadow Days," on his official Tumblr page.

"I'm excited to share the first bit of sound from the album," Mayer posted. "Been looking forward to a post like this since October 14, 2010, the first day I started writing this group of songs. Enjoy."

If the contemplative, optimistic "Shadow Days" is any indication, Mayer's upcoming album, Born and Raised, will be a happy one. He's certainly earned a turn for the better: though the album was originally scheduled for an October 2011 release, it was delayed when Mayer was diagnosed with granuloma and forced to undergo extensive throat surgery.

Listen to "Shadow Days" at Mayer's Tumblr.
