Temptations Singer Otis 'Damon' Harris Dead at 62

Otis "Damon" Harris, a singer with the Temptations who joined the group in the 1970s, died on Monday at the age of 62, the Baltimore Sun reports. A family spokesman told the paper that Harris had been fighting prostate cancer for 14 years.

Harris grew up in Baltimore and was a fan of the Temptations as a teenager. Along with three high school friends, he formed a Temptations cover band called the Young Tempts, which changed its name to the Young Vandals after releasing their first singles on the Isley Brothers' T-Neck label. In 1971, he auditioned to join his idols when one of the original lead singers, Eddie Kendricks, left the band. Since the group already had one Otis in founding member Otis Williams, Harris changed his first name to Damon.

Harris sang lead vocals on several Temptations hits, including "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," "Take a Look Around" and "Masterpiece." The group won three Grammy awards with Harris on board as first tenor. In 1975, Harris left the Temptations and rejoined his high school friends, now renamed Impact. The group recoorded two disco and funk albums, Impact and The Pac is Back and scored a hit with their 1976 track "Give a Broken Heart a Break." In 1978, Harris released a solo album titled Silk, before retiring from music to finish college.

Emmylou Harris Charged in L.A. Freeway Accident

Emmylou Harris has been charged with a misdemeanor traffic offense in connection with a Los Angeles highway accident last year, The Associated Press reports. A lawyer for the Grammy-winning singer has entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf, according to TMZ.

The hit-and-run charge stems from a fender-bender last October on the 405 freeway. The California Highway Patrol began investigating the incident when someone filed a report claiming that Harris didn't stop after the rental car she was driving hit another vehicle.

A representative for Harris called the crash a "garden-variety accident that happens every day on the 405," and added that the musician left the scene because she didn't realize she'd hit another car. If convicted on the hit-and-run charge, Harris could face up to six months in jail.

The singer next month will release a new album of duets with Rodney Crowell.

Calvin Harris Lands the 'Unattainable' Florence Welch

calvin harris Calvin Harris at the MTV Video Music Awards

Talk to any EDM artist and they'll tell you: artists who previously seemed unreachable are now within grasp. That should be even more so the case for Calvin Harris, who's enjoyed considerable top 40 success teaming with Rihanna, Ne-Yo and more. Yet Harris didn't think he had any chance of securing Florence Welch for their new "Sweet Nothing" single.

"I didn’t think she’d do it," he tells Rolling Stone. "She seemed a really unattainable artist to reach for."

So, why does he think she agreed? "I think she would’ve done it if the song was right and the people were right and it was all at the right time," he says, adding, "I did a remix for her and she owed me a favor – I guess part of it was that."

The track will be included on Harris' 18 Months album, which will be released on October 29th. Befitting its title, the collection will be a look back at his ascent to the top of the pops over the last year and a half. "It’s like a compilation album. It’s everything I did over the past 18 months, so [it's got] Rihanna, Kelis, Ne-Yo, Florence, Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah, Ellie Goulding," he says. "It looks good."

For Harris, this is the 2012 model of the album. "If you approach every track like it’s a single, it can never really be an album in the traditional sense," he says. "So it’s very much a modern album in that you can go on iTunes, see a collection of tracks, which you may have heard, and you can just buy what you want."

Deadmau5, Calvin Harris Sets Nixed as U.K. Dance Festival Ends Early

Organizers of the Creamfields festival near Cheshire, England, canceled the last day of the EDM event after heavy rain and flooding overtook the festival grounds, the BBC reports. Yesterday's headliners included Deadmau5 and Calvin Harris, but people had begun to leave the festival Saturday night because of the poor weather. Organizers informed attendees on Sunday morning of the decision to cancel. Skrillex and Avicii were among those who had already performed.

Rain also dominated the Isle of Wight festival earlier this summer, leaving thousands stranded as the festival grounds were flooded.
