Fiona Apple Reveals New Album Track Listing

'The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do'

Fiona Apple revealed to her fans on Facebook yesterday that her fourth album, The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do, will be released on June 26th. The songwriter shared the cover art for the album and its full track listing, which is as follows:

"Hot Knife"

Apple has not revealed details of who produced the record, or what song will be selected as a lead single. The singer has been performing three of these songs – "Anything We Want," "Valentine" and "Every Single Night" - regularly on her recent tour of small clubs. Fiona Apple Kicks Off Tour with Manic Chicago Show

Fiona Apple has never played by the rules. "It's all an adventure," the singer-songwriter told Rolling Stone in 1997, when asked about the best piece of advice she'd ever received. "Do whatever you want." At the time, Apple was just 20 years old and had recently released her debut album, Tidal. Fourteen years, two albums and a prolonged period of inactivity later, she's still living on her own terms. On Sunday evening, after performing just under an hour of tunes at Chicago's Lincoln Hall to kick off a mini-tour, Apple ripped off her mike, bid the crowd farewell and strutted offstage, leaving no hope for an encore.

No matter. Apple wasted little time in proving herself as animated and enthralling a performer as she was during her Nineties heyday. Performing for an audience that included members of Wilco, she emerged onto a cramped stage with her four-piece crack band, a cup of tea, a makeshift metal pipe-based instrument and a goodie bag full of what one can only imagine. Candles flickered atop a well-worn grand piano resting on the stage. There was no hello. No small talk. No chatter. Instead, she began to spasm as her band cranked into the stop-start, piano-based jazz groove of "Fast as You Can," a jolt of energy from her 1999 LP When the Pawn. The first tune set the pattern for the evening: Apple would plow through a number in quick fashion and with no frills or flair, only hard-charging adrenaline. After each song, the band would keep playing while Apple shimmied, slithered and convulsed to her own whimsy. Later, while seated at the piano, her eyes took on a frantic gaze. The band provided just enough swagger to flesh out the singer's manic desires while never overshadowing the night's clear centerpiece.

The set was sprinkled with fan favorites: the sultry swing of "Sleep To Dream" countered the quirky splash of "Extraordinary Machine"; the gentle, lilting "Paper Bag" danced alongside the tidal wave of "Carrion." But just as she did in her two performances at SXSW last week, Apple also unveiled three new numbers, all of which one can safely assume will see the light of day on the singer's recently announced mouthful-of-a-fourth album, The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do. "Anything We Want" and "Valentine" came in succession, the former a longing for affection (You can see it … and will grow ... take our clothes off/ And you will remember that I wanted you to kiss me") that swirled around a revolving sample of the aforementioned metal pipe instrument. "Valentine" is a more forlorn, ruminative piano-based number that sees Apple finding solace in reality ("I stand no chance of growing up/I've made my peace, I'm dead and done"). Apple grappled with herself on the third new tune, "Every Single Night": "I just want to feel everything/ So I'm gonna try to be still.”

It was a lovefest thoughout: cries of, "We love you," and, "Goddamn, we missed you" sprang up from the crowd, eliciting a rare laugh and childlike smile from the otherwise firmly-focused Apple. As she ended the evening with Tidal’s sexually-charged single "Criminal," Apple swayed in the shadows with the back of her hand resting on her forehead, much like a child checks for a fever. The band continued, but Apple had already moved on: swiftly, with fluid movements, she removed her wireless mike, wrapped it in a tidy ball and placed it atop the piano. Apple posed, almost Shakespearian-like for a moment. "I love you very, very much. Goodbye," she finally said, addressing the crowd one of the few times all evening. Then, she disappeared.

Fiona Apple Previews New Material At SXSW Show

It takes a lot to stand out at SXSW, where any given night offers roughly 8,621 bands to see and 367 food trucks at which to refuel between sets. But a Fiona Apple show is a draw in any context. Until last night in Austin, Apple hadn't performed in five years outside of her homebase of Los Angeles, where the singer-songwriter joins her musician friends onstage every so often at the tiny Largo nightclub. Last November, she played with the composer Jon Brion and hinted that new material was in limbo, saying, "I can't remember any of my new songs because they've been done for a fucking year."

Apple's first LP in seven years is now slated for release in June (the elaborately titled The Idler Wheel is wiser than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords will serve you more than Ropes will ever do), and she's engaging in a brief tour that kicked off with a pair of appearances at SXSW, starting with an NPR-hosted showcase at Stubb's on Wednesday.

The much-ballyhooed performance all but guaranteed that a throng of festival-goers would be streaming into the venue by the time doors opened at seven. At about dusk, Apple took the stage and opened with "Fast As You Can," from her 1999 album, When the Pawn...; for those who have seen her at Largo, the slightly muddled sound and breadth of the crowd was overwhelming at times. It was overwhelming for Apple, too. At one point, she yelled at the audience, "You're not real." But the exictement for her new material outweighed logistical issues, and Apple soon settled in to a groove. She played three new tunes – "Valentine," "Every Single Night," and the sensual "Anything We Want," where she played percussion and sang ruefully, "I kept touching my neck to guide your eye to where I wanted you to kiss me when we find some time alone." Given Apple's penchant for intricate arrangements, the songs felt remarkably straightforward.

As for old fan favorites, there were several highlights, from "Criminal" and "Carrion" to "Sleep To Dream" and "Extraordinary Machine." But this show was all about the promise of what's to come, and Apple's performance only heightened the anticipation.

Fiona Apple Unveils 23-Word Album Title

Fiona Apple has revealed that her long-delayed fourth album will be titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw, and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. This incredibly long title would be very weird for pretty much any other artist on the face of the earth, but readers should remember that the singer's second album, generally known as When the Pawn…, was in fact an eight-line poem. It's likely that the singer's audience will take to abbreviating the new album's title as simply The Idler Wheel, since that is easier to remember than a 23-character acronym.

As of yet there is no official release date set for The Idler Wheel, but Epic is planning to have it stores sometime in June. The singer has committed to a number of tour dates in the near future, including a small theater tour later this month and a set at the Governor's Ball festival in New York City in June.

Fiona Apple, Beck, Modest Mouse, Passion Pit and Duck Sauce will headline the 2012 Governors Ball Music Festival at Randall's Island Park in New York City on June 23rd and 24th.

The first day of the event will be focused on dance, hip-hop and electronic acts and will feature sets by Chromeo, Major Lazer and Santigold in addition to Duck Sauce and Passion Pit. The second day will focus on rock and include performances by Cage the Elephant, Explosions in the Sky, Built to Spill and Devendra Banhart.

Both of the Sunday headliners will be playing their first New York City shows in quite some time. Beck has not played there since he toured in support of Modern Guilt in 2008, and Fiona Apple's last major Manhattan gig was in 2006 in Central Park. She will be playing a handful of small gigs in the city in March, but the majority of her fan base was shut out of those instantly sold-out shows.

New Fiona Apple Album Promised in 2012

Epic Records chairman and CEO L.A. Reid has promised that the followup to Fiona Apple's 2005 album Extraordinary Machine will hit stores sometime in early 2012. "Lots of good music coming from @Epic_Records in the next few weeks. Stay tuned music fans. Welcome back Fiona!," Reid wrote in a tweet on Sunday.

A new Apple album was rumored all through last year, but until now there had been no word from the label on an actual release. Apple confirmed that Epic had put her fourth record on hold at a concert in Los Angeles in November, explaining to fans that "I can't remember [how to play] any of my new songs because they've been done for a fucking year."

This is not the first time an Apple album has met with delays. The songwriter began work on Extraordinary Machine in 2003, but after label holdups, leaks and re-recordings, the disc was finally released in 2005 following a "Free Fiona" campaign led by her most hardcore fans.
