Bob Mould Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Film of Tribute Concert

Bob Mould Launches Kickstarter Campaign for Film of Tribute Concert'See a Little Light' was recorded by filmmaker Justin Mitchell $(document).ready(function() { $('.socialActionsTop .pageActions .email-content').hover( function() { $('.socialActionsTop .bubble.email').show(); }, function() { $('.socialActionsTop .bubble.email').hide(); } ); $('.socialActionsTop .pageActions .print-page').hover( function() { $('.socialActionsTop .bubble.print').show(); }, function() { $('.socialActionsTop .bubble.print').hide(); } ); }); By

Last November, an all-star roster of musicians, including Dave Grohl, Ryan Adams and Britt Daniel, gathered together to pay tribute to the former frontman of Hüsker Dü and Sugar in "See a Little Light: A Celebration of the Music and Legacy of Bob Mould." Justin Mitchell, a filmmaker whose previous work has documented artists including Death Cab for Cutie, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists and Sigur Rós, recorded footage of the concert at L.A.'s Walt Disney Concert Hall, along with the show's rehearsals and other preparations.

Earlier this week, Bob Mould launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $95,000 to complete a documentary film of the concert. The funds raised will help pay for editing, production, union costs, location fees, bandwidth, packaging, shipping and more.

"There is a significant amount of Bob's own out-of-pocket money already spent on this project and upcoming costs to make a film of this caliber a reality are high," a statement on the project's Kickstarter page says. "Due to the special nature of the event, location and performers, we want to ensure that the legacy of this night lives on for as long as possible and is shared with as many Bob fans as possible."

Rewards for contributors to the campaign include a limited-edition 7" single and unreleased recordings from Mould's February 2012 Copper Blue concert. The top prize (for a pledge of $1,500 or more) is a blue Fender stratocaster with a photo of Mould signing the instrument.

Alicia Keys Launches Interactive App for Kids

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys has launched a new interactive app for kids called "The Journals of Mama Mae and LeeLee," about the relationship between a young New York City girl and her wise grandmother, The Associated Press reports.

Available today for $3.99, Keys produced the music for the app, which is set in LeeLee's bedroom and allows users to read books, play music and write in a journal. The app was released by her own company, AK Worldwide, and Bento Box Interactive.

"It's a new adventure for me, and I'm really enjoying it," Keys said in an interview, adding that raising her two-year-old son, Egypt, helped inspire the app.

"I was just getting introduced to kind of the TV shows and the DVDs and all the things you start kind of introducing your kids to, and I thought how cool it would be to be a part of something that really allows them to hear music from different places, different cultures, different sounds," she added. "That's what we're able to do with this."

The app is also somewhat based on Keys' relationship with her own grandmother, with the musician noting, "It does remind me of my world . . . The piano, the journal, music's such a big part of my life, the city, all of that."

As for her own music, Keys is set to release her fifth studio album, Girl On Fire, on November 27th. Check out the video for the title track and lead single.

Amy Winehouse Foundation Launches U.S. Outreach

Before she died last year at age 27, Amy Winehouse told her family that she wanted to one day open a music school in St. Lucia, preserve jazz culture in New Orleans, and help heal children globally through the power of music. Her father, Mitch Winehouse, who has headed the U.K.-based Amy Winehouse Foundation since its inception nine months ago, pledged to grant all three wishes during last night's U.S. launch in New York.

The stage at Joe's Pub served as a fitting venue for the announcement: it was this intimate East Village club that hosted the late singer's American debut in January 2007, two months before Back to Black was released here.

"Unfortunately, Amy was not the biggest believer in rehab, and she thought that she could do it herself," her brother, Alex Winehouse, 32, told the group of foundation directors and guests. He said the family last saw Amy alive when they took her to a treatment facility in London last year. She died from alcohol poisoning in July.

"Only one person was responsible, and that's Amy," Mitch Winehouse told Rolling Stone following the event, during which he sang a few numbers backed by a five-piece jazz band. "She came from the most loving family, and that didn't protect her from her addictions. It can affect anybody. And I want to get that message across."

Mitch Winehouse, a former cab driver in London, now dedicates his time to the foundation, which has raised one million pounds for U.K.-based children's hospices. Its newly announced U.S. arm will lend support to music therapy and after-school programs for disadvantaged children, he explained.

Last night the foundation made its first U.S. pledge: $10,000 to the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra. "We feel that if you put a musical instrument in somebody's hand, they're never going to put a gun in their hands," Winehouse said.

Amy's mother, Janis Winehouse-Collins, attended the event and stood by her former husband as he unveiled the title and cover of his forthcoming memoir, Amy, My Daughter, due through HarperCollins on June 26th. Sales will benefit the foundation; recent reports value Amy Winehouse's estate at more than $4 million.

Monte Lipman, president and CEO of Universal Republic Records, home to artists including Jack Johnson and Florence and the Machine, recalled spending time backstage with Winehouse following that first U.S. show at Joe's Pub. "She was unlike any other artist we had ever seen," he told Rolling Stone. "Here's an artist that just had the absolute opposite approach to things. And we loved it."

The foundation also announced its first Amy Winehouse Inspiration Awards and Gala, which will feature performances in her honor on September 10 at the Waldorf Astoria. Tony Bennett is expected to perform, a source familiar with the gala plans told Rolling Stone, adding that Adele and Coldplay are among those being courted.

Queen Latifah Launches CW Singing Competition

The CW will launch their own singing competition show later this year featuring Gloria Estefan and John Rich as mentors. The program, tentatively titled The Star Next Door, will be produced by Queen Latifah and Dave Broome, the creator of The Biggest Loser on NBC. The network has ordered 10 episodes of the series for the summer season.

The Star Next Door will slightly tweak the formula of other popular singing competitions by placing an emphasis on the home towns of contestants. The show will begin with a nationwide talent search, and then the mentors will head to the top singers' homes and immerse themselves in the local culture.

Photos: Random Notes

The CW has not yet announced the show's full panel of mentors, or whether the show will feature a host, like American Idol and The X Factor.
