Q&A: Crazy Horse's Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro on 37 Years With Neil Young

Neil Young And Crazy Horse to Release New Album 'Americana' on June 5th

Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release their new LP Americana on June 5th. It's their first album together since Greendale in 2003, and their first album with the full Crazy Horse line-up of Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Frank "Poncho" Sampedro since Broken Arrow in 1996. The songs on Americana are all classic American folk songs, including "This Land Is Your Land," "Gallows Pole," "Tom Dooley" and "Clementine."

At the Slamdance Film Festival earlier this year, Young talked about the album. "A very young choir of children plays with Crazy Horse [on the album,]" he said. "They're songs we all know from kindergarden, but Crazy Horse has rearranged them, and they now belong to us."

"What ties these songs together is the fact that while they may represent an America that may no longer exist," says a press release announcing the new album."The emotions and scenarios behind these songs still resonate with what’s going on in the country today with equal, if not greater impact nearly 200 years later. The lyrics reflect the same concerns and are still remarkably meaningful to a society going through economic and cultural upheaval, especially during an election year. They are just as poignant and powerful today as the day they were written."

The disc was recorded at Audio Casa Blanca and was produced by Neil Young and John Hanlon with Mark Humphreys.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse made their first live appearance since 2004 last month at the MusicCares tribute to Paul McCartney in Los Angeles. They played "I Saw Her Standing There" that many critics called a highlight of the star-studded show, though the band has released no touring plans. "I honestly have not heard a solitary thing about touring," Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote on his Facebook page last month.

Here is the complete track-listing for Americana:

"Oh Susannah"
"Clementine?"
"Tom Dooley"
"?Gallows Pole?"
"Get A Job?"
"Travel On?"
"High Flyin’ Bird?"
"She’ll Be Comin ’Round The Mountain"
"This Land Is Your Land?"
"Wayfarin’ Stranger?"
"God Save The Queen"

Neil Young & Crazy Horse to Make Live Return at Paul McCartney Tribute

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are going to play at the MusicCares Person of the Year Gala honoring Paul McCartney on February 10th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Other acts on the bill of the Grammy weekend charity concert include Coldplay, Foo Fighters, Alicia Keys, Katy Perry, James Taylor, Alison Krauss, Tony Bennett, the cast of the Beatles LOVE, and McCartney himself. Eddie Izzard will host.

This will be Neil Young and Crazy Horse's first public performance since the Greendale tour wrapped up in March 2004. The group has reportedly wrapped up work on a new studio album, and just recently they posted a newly recorded 37-minute jam on Neil Young's official website that wraps up with an epic rendition of "Cortez The Killer." There's no word about a tour for the group, but it's probably a safe bet that they'll hit the road at some point this year.

Neil Young toured regularly with Crazy Horse regularly between their formation in 1969 and the Greendale tour of 2003/04, but over the past eight years Young has turned his attention towards other projects. Many fans worried that the group would never tour again, but Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina recently wrote on his Facebook wall that he had no such fears. "We were just grazing," he wrote. "But never gone!"

Listen To A (Probably) New Thirty-Seven Minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse Jam

neil young crazy horse Neil Young and Crazy Horse performing at Farm Aid 2003.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse fans, prepare to have your minds blown. This morning, a new video appeared on Young's website of a thirty-seven minute Neil Young and Crazy Horse jam session. Unfortunately, the video merely shows tape rolling back in a studio from many different angles – but many Neil-ologists on the internet have concluded that it's newly recorded. The group plays tiny bits of "Fuckin' Up" and a few other songs in the midst of a crazily long jam, before transitioning into an epic version of "Cortez The Killer" after about nineteen minutes.

Sharp-eyed fans will notice lyrics to a handful of previously unknown songs scattered around the studio, as well as a rubber chicken and an alligator head. The titles of the songs appear to read "Oh Susanna," "Love + Wall," "Ontario," "This Land Is Your Land," "Gallows Tree," "Oh My Darling" and "Clementine."  This could certainly be an old recording, but judging by the sound of Young's singing voice, it seems to be new. We can't embed the video here, so check it out on Young's official website.

As we previously reported, Young recently announced at the Slamdance Film Festival that he is recording new material with Crazy Horse. When asked to describe the sound of the music on his Facebook page, Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina wrote: "It's different, but Neil Young and Crazy Horse style!" If this jam is any indication, he's definitely right about that latter part. They sound absolutely amazing. Let's all hope they announce some tour dates soon.

Neil Young Recording New Album With Crazy Horse

Neil Young Neil Young jams with Crazy Horse guitarist Frank 'Poncho' Sampedro in Hong Kong in November 2003.RICHARD A. BROOKS/AFP/Getty Images

Neil Young is recording a new album with Crazy Horse, according to a post on Young's fansite Thrasher's Wheat – and now confirmed by Rolling Stone: "It's looking good," a representative for Young says. According to the fansite report, Young shared the news over the weekend at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, at an event with Jonathan Demme to promote their new movie Journeys. The audience "erupted in applause" when Young said that he was working with Crazy Horse again. Multiple fans subsequently posted on Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina's Facebook wall to ask if the news was true. His response: "Yes!"

Young began playing with the garage rock band in 1968 and they back him on many of his greatest albums, including Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Zuma, Rust Never Sleeps and Ragged Glory. Their last album was the 2003 rock opera Greendale, though it didn't feature guitarist Frank "Poncho" Sampedro. The band (including Poncho) toured with Young in 2003 and 2004 to support the disc, though they haven't played together since the tour ended March 21st, 2004 at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts. This has been the longest time Young has gone without performing with the group since their formation, though Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina played with Young on his 2007 disc Chrome Dreams II and the first few legs of the supporting tour. He was replaced by drummer Chad Cromwell in the summer of 2008 for unknown reasons.

The full line-up of Crazy Horse hasn't backed Young on an album since Broken Arrow in 1996, though they did record an LP in 2000 called Toast that Neil opted to shelf. "It's great rock & roll, very moody, kind of jazzy," Young told Rolling Stone in 2008, who was then contemplating a release of the disc. "It's really dark. It's got everything that the best Crazy Horse albums have had. It won't be the most commercial Crazy Horse album ever out."

In that same interview, we asked Neil if he had any desire to work with Crazy Horse again. "I'm not thinking about that right now," he said. "We'll just see what happens. Something might happen. You never know. Or something else we don't even know about could happen, and that would be really good, rather than go back. But if the vibe's right to go back and grab what's back there and yank it into the future, that's a big job."

According to the report on Thrasher's Wheat, Young said that he's already recorded one album with Crazy Horse and another is in the works. It's unclear if Toast is the finished album. There's word of a spring release for the album, but don't get your hopes up too high. Things change very quickly in the world of Neil Young. Remember that 30-date Buffalo Springfield that was supposedly happening this year?
