'Duets' Recap: Going Solo

duets bridget carrington Bridget Carrington performs on 'Duets.'

Duets sent a mixed message during its penultimate episode last night, which was called "Superstars' Choice" even though the main focus was on the amateurs picking one of their own songs. Yes, after what seemed like an infinite amount of duets week after tedious week, the homestretch was largely based on each of the final three singing solo. That's kind of a defeatist attitude for a show called Duets, dontcha think?

But let's back up, because at the beginning of the hour one of the hopefuls was eliminated based on viewers' votes: Bridget Carrington. Her departure leaves John Legend partnerless (like Robin Thicke before him) and the finale overflowing with testosterone.

While unfortunate, Bridget's exit wasn't surprising, considering she had a shaky performance last week. But really, Jason Farol should have gotten the pink slip . . . yet he wasn't even in the bottom two! (John Glosson actually stood alongside Bridget, awaiting his fate.) How or why that drip has lasted this long is beyond us. He keeps getting pushed forward as if he's already signed the coveted Hollywood Records deal. That scares us because, of the three left, he's the least deserving of a recording contract, but it's possible he could come out on top because of the way the judges have gushed about him all season, particularly this week.

For the night's performances, each amateur sang both with their partner and by themselves. Below, we break down who we think will win next week and why.

The Whole Package: J Rome
This guy pretty much has had the competition sewn up since he stepped onstage back in week one. Seriously, it was like "just add water" to this insta-pop star: He has the looks, he has the vocal chops and he knows how to work a crowd. However, that rock star-ready savvy could also be his Achilles' heel. As American Idol has proven over the years, viewers don't always crown the most polished (or deserving) person the winner. Still, week after week he has delivered strong performances, and this week was no different.

For his duet with mentor Jennifer Nettles, he sang the Script's "Breakeven." Maybe it wasn't the strongest or most exciting song choice, but it worked. He sounded good, looked the part and, as always, really gelled with Jennifer. For his solo song he also picked something a little unexpected, "Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours)" by Stevie Wonder. As always, he dominated the stage like a seasoned pro, proving he can shine without a celeb by his side. As if we didn't know that already.

The Voice: John Glosson
If the show was based on vocal ability alone, this guy should win. But it's not, so we're predicting he'll be the first to be knocked out next week. Although his voice is velvety smooth and nearly pitch-perfect, he's lacking some stage presence and a contemporary vibe. Case in point: The fact he sang Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion's "The Prayer" alongside mentor Nettles for his duet. While it showed off his range and ability, it was both obscure and snoozy. The most impressive thing about the whole performance was watching Jennifer sing in Italian with a country twang. For his solo, he chose Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road," which might also elude a younger, mainstream audience who's more likely to vote. Plus, he seemed a bit shaky stepping out from behind Jennifer's shadow, sounding a bit pitchy for the first time ever and missing his usual charisma.

The Wild Card: Jason Farol
We're almost inclined to think the judges latched onto this marblemouthed shy guy for shits and giggles because they were so bored or weren't really paying attention. Either way, we'll say it again: We have no clue how he got this far. He should have been tossed the first week of eliminations – or the second, or the third. But for some reason, he kept hanging on. Now, he could win the whole damn thing, especially since the judges have practically tripped over themselves heaping praise on him. All we see is a wet rag.

For his duet with mentor Kelly Clarkson, he sang "Me and Mrs. Jones," which he once performed a cappella when he was in the bottom two for, like, the umpteenth time. He might be the "best looking," with his exotic baby face and dapper suits, but he's just so boring and unpolished it would be a joke if he won. But that didn't stop Robin Thicke from claiming he "brought down the house" during his awkward solo rendition of Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby." To us, he sucked all the life and energy out of the song and somehow made it both boring and cringe-worthy. A truly amazing feat. So if you want to reward that, America, by all means, crown him the winner.

Should win: J Rome. As we said, he's the whole package. His biggest competition is Jason since, aside from voice-of-reason John Legend, the judges really went to bat for the Filipino "heartthrob" at the end of the night. Plus, the producers gave Jason the coveted "pimp spot," which let him perform right before voting opened.

Will win: J Rome. We have faith that America will do the right thing and crown him the victor. Now, don't go dashing our dreams.

Last week: A Less Than 'Unforgettable' Night

Lionel Richie Duets With Kenny Rogers at SXSW

Lionel Richie performs at the Billboard Showcase during SXSW at ACL Live in Austin, Texas.

Lionel Richie may not be a typical SXSW buzz band, but the R&B icon used his set at ACL Live’s Moody Theater – where he anchored Billboard’s showcase – to remind the music industry just exactly who he is and where he’s been. The performance proved he’s still got some of the magic that made him one of the most successful male solo artists of the 1980s, following his stint in one of Motown’s most successful acts, the Commodores.

"Why has it taken me this long to make it to South By Southwest?" he asked at the beginning of his hit-heavy set, before launching into a series of Commodore classics including "Easy (Like Sunday Morning)" and, later, "Brick House." Shortly after coming on strong, he told the crowd that he was going to change his set around for an unplanned solo piano segment. "In fact, I think I want the band to leave the stage," he said. "Just me; just you." He then tickled the ivories for a stirring renditions of "Still" and "Oh No."

Other bits of the night appeared to be either spontaneous, or at least unexpected, such as when the band launched into a jam of Van Halen’s "Jump" in the middle of Richie’s own "Dancing on the Ceiling."

But the true highlight came when Richie invited Kenny Rogers to the stage. "I’m about to bring out one of my dearest friends and we made many records together," said Richie. Turning to Rogers, he said, "Kenny, having you up on this stage is about the best thing that could happen to either of us." He then recalled that the first time he met Rogers, he told the music legend that one day he wanted to be as big as him. "I’m still not there," he joked – kinda. The pair performed "Lady," after which they embraced.

Richie has a new album coming out later this month, Tuskegee, but chose to dig deep into his Commodores catalog, as well as pull out crowd pleasers from his solo career including an encore of "All Night Long (All Night)."

Nonetheless, he made his purpose at this relatively intimate show at his first SXSW clear: "We’re about to go on a world tour," he said. "And this is a warm-up to the warm-up to the warm-up."

Bret Michaels New Album to Include Duets With Loretta Lynn, Jimmy Buffett

Bret Michaels performs at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York. Bret Michaels performs at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island, New York.

Bret Michaels' upcoming solo album, Get Your Rock On, will include a few friends. "Loretta Lynn and I are gonna redo 'Every Rose Has It’s Thorn' together," he tells Rolling Stone. "And, for me, growing up in a family that my father loved country music and Coal Miner’s Daughter, this is gonna be a really awesome time."

How did the two come together? "I met her at Thanksgiving and it was really great. We were out at her ranch in Hurricane Mills and we sat there, me and her, and after everyone, the whole family and my crew sort of dissipated we sat there and started writing some songs together," he says. And one of the ideas she had was redoing 'Every Rose Has It’s Thorn' and I thought it would be unbelievable for me and her to do that together."

Among the other guests on the album are Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen and Jimmy Buffett. "The song 'Get Your Rock On' has Phil Collen from Def Leppard playing guitar with me and it also has Sal Costa from My Darkest Days, really, really good guitar player and good friend," he says. "Jimmy Buffet and I did a live version of 'Margaritaville' together."

Michaels says the two duets, with Lynn and Buffett, will be "two bonus tracks." And of the rest of the record he says, "It is just straight up in your face rock & roll."

"Every Rose Has It's Thorn" is just one of the songs that came from his Thanksgiving jam session with Lynn. There will be more. "There are two songs we wrote together. One of them is going to appear, she’s a doing a new album with T-Bone Burnett, we’re gonna go down and do one on that," he says. "And then we’re gonna do one [on] an album that’s called Me, My Guitar And I, it’s a record that will come out either later in the year or sometime next year."

Michaels will be very busy in 2012, with Poison hitting the road this summer with Def Leppard in addition to his two planned solo albums. He gets off to a raucous start tonight at the Saban Theater in L.A., where he'll close out the Grammy Foundation Music Preservation Project's Salute To Live Music. The night, which will be co-hosted by Sharon Osbourne and Steve Vai, will also feature Shelby Lynne, Robert Cray, A Fine Frenzy, Dave Koz, Ledisi and more.

"Sharon Osbourne hosting this, you’re talking about one of the biggest personalities with Sharon, Steve Vai, one of the best musicians and coolest guys, that’s a good day," he says. Though Michaels did notice one thing about all of the acts on the roster. "I think everyone on the bill has either gotten a Grammy or been nominated except for me. I am the Susan Lucci of rock & roll without a nomination," he says laughing.
