On the Cover: Mumford & Sons Rattle and Strum

Mumford & Sons, issue 1179 Mumford & Sons on the cover of Rolling Stone.

Mumford & Sons make their debut appearance on the cover of Rolling Stone in our next issue. Senior writer Brian Hiatt shadows the group as they finish the most recent leg of their U.S. tour in Camden, New Jersey, then hangs out with them on their London home turf, including backstage at the Brit Awards. The band speaks openly about faith, their imitators and the improbable rise of an acoustic band in a digital age. "I have no idea how my phone works," says frontman Marcus Mumford, "Whereas, when I see an acoustic guitar played with gusto, I understand how it works."

Look for the issue on stands and in the iTunes App Store this Friday, March 15th.

Cover Story Excerpt: Jimmy Kimmel Prepares For Battle With Jay Leno

jimmy kimmel 1174 Jimmy Kimmel on the cover of Rolling Stone.

In the new issue of Rolling Stone, Contributing Editor Jonah Weiner smokes weed with Jimmy Kimmel and chats with the late-night host about his promotion to the coveted 11:30 p.m. time slot, his undying hatred of Jay Leno and why he sees Jimmy Fallon as a "worthy competitor." Here's an excerpt from the latest cover story, "Here's Jimmy":

Photos: A History of Comedy Stars on the Cover of Rolling Stone

In 24 hours, Jimmy Kimmel will stand up in his office at the El Capitan theatre in Hollywood, looking less like a talk-show host and more, to use his words, like "a hobo." He'll be wearing baggy mesh Dodgers shorts, a rumpled old Coca-Cola T-shirt and no shoes; his hair will stick out in three directions. As he leaves his desk, where he's been refining jokes since the morning, his transformation into late-night star will begin. After a quick haircut, he'll carry his MacBook to the makeup room, where he'll put the finishing touches on his monologue while a woman named Stephanie puts the finishing touches on his face: powdering his skin, shaping his eyebrows, blackening his hair where it's a bit too gray or a bit too thin for HD. In his private bathroom, he'll change into a crisp white shirt, a colorful Prada tie and slim blue Gucci pants. His wardrobe guy will bring the matching jacket, steamed and lint-rolled and bearing a sticker on its lining that says ABC ASSET above a bar code marking it as network property. "I've got the same bar code tattooed on me," Kimmel will joke. "It used to say ABC LIABILITY, but they changed it when the ratings got good." As he makes his way downstairs – where a 200-strong crowd is waiting for that night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! to start – a group of writers, producers and crew will fist-bump Kimmel and chant, as they do before every episode, "Best show ever! Best show ever!" His band will launch into an ecstatic fanfare and Kimmel will stroll out, hit his electrical-taped mark, and fix his eyes on the teleprompter as the audience roars its welcome: showtime.

But that's not for 24 hours. Right now it's Sunday night, Kimmel is at his beach house, and he wants to get high. "If we smoke weed right now," he asks, "is that on the record?"

Kimmel is sitting at a weathered wooden table in his dining room. Blinky and unshaven, hair tousled, he looks like he just woke up from a phenomenal nap. Kimmel's fiancee, Live! co-head writer Molly McNearney, is in the kitchen, drinking fruit punch and tapping on her phone. "I don't know if I want this in the story," Kimmel, 45, says, padding off to retrieve his stash. "My kids are gonna read this.?.?.?."

He returns with a vacuum-sealed baggie bulging with buds the size of baby Brussels sprouts.

JuiceheaD and Osaka Popstar teamed up to record a cover of Fugazi's classic "Waiting Room" for a new single due out on Record Store Day. "I reached out to [Fugazi's label] Dischord about covering the song and eventually had the pleasure of speaking to [Fugazi singer] Ian MacKaye personally about it," says Osaka Popstar leader John Cafiero. "Conceptually it was intimidating, because talking to Ian MacKaye about covering 'Waiting Room' is like walking on metaphorical hallowed ground. But he's truly someone that lives up to his ethos."

"To me, 'Waiting Room' is truly a punk anthem and indicative of the indie music movement in general," says Cafiero. "I'm proud to have the chance to ignite a flame in its honor for Record Store Day. I don’t think the song, the artwork created for this release by Shepard Fairey, or the intention of everyone and everything surrounding this project, for that matter, could be any more perfectly suited to the cause."

JuiceheaD X Osaka Popstar's version of "Waiting Room" will be available at independent record stores on April 21st, but you can download it here for free.

New 'Sgt. Pepper' Cover Created for Artist's 80th Birthday

Sir Peter Blake, the artist who created the iconic cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, has created a new version of the cover to celebrate his 80th birthday. The new artwork, which has been posted on the Guardian's website, includes many new faces, such as Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, Amy Winehouse, Noel Gallagher, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and Ian Curtis. The new artwork was created for a Blake retrospective at Wayne Hemingway's Vintage festival in Northamptonshire, England in July.

"I've chosen people I admire, great people and some who are dear friends," Blake told the Guardian. "I had a very long list of people who I wanted to go in but couldn't fit everyone in – I think that shows how strong British culture and its legacy of the last six decades is."

Cover Story Excerpt: Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence Jennifer Lawrence photographed in California, January 30th, 2012.

The following is an excerpt of the Jennifer Lawrence cover story in the April 12th, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone, on stands March 30th.

"Dude!" says Jennifer Lawrence into her cellphone. "I'm lost as fuck! I've been driving around for, like, 10 minutes. Where the hell is this place?"

She's looking for a horse stable. We have plans to go horseback riding in the canyons above Malibu, but neither of us can find the place. I tell her to pull over and I'll come find her.

The most talented young actress in America is idling on a side street in her white Volkswagen, in blue jeans, a gray T-shirt and designer shades. Her naturally blond hair is pulled back in a loose ponytail, and her elbows are sticking out the open window. She's famous for playing vulnerable young women with wills of steel, as with her Oscar-nominated turn in Winter's Bone, or as the bow-and-arrow-toting Katniss Everdeen in the just-released Hunger Games. Right now her face says she means business.

Peter Travers' Original Review: 'The Hunger Games'

"I have to pee so bad."

We drive a little more and find the stable, which, it turns out, isn't a stable, just a red-dirt parking lot where a horse trailer is parked. Lawrence jumps out of the VW and is off like a flash, running off down the trail in search of a bush. Two twentysomething hiker babes in sunglasses and sports bras, SoCal trail chic, do a double take as she sprints past. Was that...?

Lawrence, 21, has a way of making a first impression. Woody Harrelson, her Hunger Games co-star, still remembers their first meeting. "I was on my bus," he says, "and on my bus I have a yoga swing. Jennifer comes on, and she goes, 'Hi, Woody, I'm J— is that a sex swing?' Her first sentence to me."

Josh Hutcherson, also from The Hunger Games: "When I got cast, she called me up for one of those five-minute 'Excited to work with you, blah, blah, blah' things. The conversation started with her saying, 'Think about a catheter going in – ouch!' and then turns into a 45-minute rant about zombies and the apocalypse."

And here's Zoë Kravitz, who appeared with Lawrence in X-Men: First Class and who is one of her best friends: "I'd met her a few times, and she was like, 'You should come over and we'll hang out.' So I go over to her apartment, and she opens the door in a towel. She's like, 'Come in, sorry, you're early, I was about to shower.' And she drops her towel and gets in the shower, and starts shaving her legs, totally naked. She was like, 'Are we here yet? Is this OK?' And I was like, 'I guess we're there!'"

Photos: If Rockers Ruled Panem – Bieber, Lambert, Minaj and More Star in Our Version of 'The Hunger Games'

Lawrence finishes peeing in record time ("I'm the fastest pee-er ever," she says later. "I'm famous for it") and starts heading back down the trail. She's barely had time to button her jeans when the two hikers stop her. "I'm sorry to bother you," one says. "But could I get your autograph? My niece is 15. It would make her year."

Fifteen-year-old nieces are Lawrence's sweet spot right now. The Hunger Games trilogy is the biggest teen juggernaut since Twilight, with 24 million copies of the books in print. And since its post-apocalyptic action-packed love story appeals to boys as much as girls, experts are predicting the movie to make approximately a gajillion dollars, with three sequels already in the works.

Back in the parking lot, we meet up with our guide, Jasmin, who introduces us to our mounts for the day. Lawrence gets a white mare named Nay-Nay, who Jasmin says had a cameo in HBO's Band of Brothers. "Oh!" Lawrence says, petting her on the nose. "You're famous!"

Watch video from Jennifer Lawrence's cover photo shoot in California:

Cover Story Excerpt: Bruce Springsteen

bruce springsteen 1153 Bruce Springsteen on the cover of 'Rolling Stone,' Issue 1153.Mark Seliger for RollingStone.com

The following is an excerpt from the Bruce Springsteen cover story in the March 29th, 2012 issue of Rolling Stone, on stands March 16th.

Springsteen arrives at The Daily Show's Manhattan studios on foot one icy day in late January, fresh from Jersey – he fought the wind for the dozen blocks from the Lincoln Tunnel along 11th Avenue, wearing only a thin leather jacket. "There was traffic," says Springsteen, "so Patti dropped me off." ("The Freehold is strong in that one," Stewart says, picturing this journey.) Back from taping that night's Daily Show, Stewart joins Springsteen in his cluttered office – where there's already a photo of the two men together pinned to the wall – after exchanging his suit and tie for khakis and a long-sleeved T-shirt.

In recent years, Stewart has seen his decades-long Springsteen fandom turn into a friendship. "It's in no way surreal," Stewart says with heavy sarcasm. "It's the most natural thing in the world. It's very hard to reconcile sitting and fishing in a little pond in New Jersey with a guy you spent many years hitchhiking the I-95 corridor to see in Philadelphia back in the day. The only band I think I've seen more than Bruce Springsteen is the Springsteen tribute band Backstreets. I try not to let him know how pathetic I truly am."

Bruce Springsteen Explains His Experimental New Album

Stewart grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, 30 miles northwest of Springsteen's Monmouth County hometown. "Every car he sang about you were like, 'I've seen that up on blocks in the backyard right near where I live.'" He saw his first Springsteen show on 1978's Darkness on the Edge of Town tour, when he was about 15. "The first time you hear Darkness, you begin to plan how to move out of New Jersey," says Stewart. (Like Springsteen, Stewart eventually returned, and has a home in the Garden State: "You realize, hey, New Jersey's all right, actually!")

On Springsteen's new album, Wrecking Ball, his characters aren't looking for escape – they just want a job. With fiercely populist tunes like "Death to My Hometown" and "Jack of All Trades," Springsteen paints a picture of an America where "the banker man grows fat/Working man grows thin." Springsteen wanted the new songs to address "what happened to the social fabric of the world that we're living in."

Bruce Springsteen Kicks Off 2012 Tour at New York's Apollo Theater

"Hope and Dreams" and other songs on the album's second half seem to move from the personal and political to a sense of the spiritual.
Well, on the first half of the record, you're just pissed off. The first cut, "We Take Care of Our Own," is where I set out the questions that I'm going to try to answer. The song's chorus is posed as a challenge and a question. Do we take care of our own? What happened to that social contract? Where did that go over the past 30 years? How has it been eroded so terribly? And how is it that the outrage about that erosion is just beginning to be voiced right now? I've written about this stuff for those 30 years, from Darkness on the Edge of Town to The Ghost of Tom Joad through to today. It all came out of the Carter recession of the late Seventies, and when I was writing about that, my brother-in-law lost his construction job and went to work as a janitor in the local high school. It changed his life.

So these are issues and things that occur over and over again in history and land on the backs of the same people. In my music – if it has a purpose beyond dancing and fun and vacuuming your floor to it – I always try to gauge the distance between American reality and the American dream. The mantra that I go into in the last verse of "We Take Care of Our Own" – "Where are the eyes, where are the hearts?" – it's really: "Where are those things now, what happened to those things over the past 30 years? What happened to the social fabric of the world that we're living in? What's the price that people pay for it on a daily basis?" Which is something that I lived with intensely as a child, and is probably the prime motivation for the subjects I've written about since I was very, very young.

Someone wrote in The New York Times that "We Take Care of Our Own" was "jingoistic."
Whoever said that, they need a smarter pop writer.

Review: Bruce Springsteen's 'Wrecking Ball'

[Laughs] It takes you back to the days of "Born in the U.S.A.," which was so widely misunderstood.
Yeah. I didn't feel that so much from this particular instance, but you write the best piece of music you can, and you put it out there, and then you see what comes back at you. Lately, it seems as if the polarization of the country has gotten so extreme that people want to force you into being either a phony "patriot" or an "apologist." Nuanced political dialogue or creative expression seems like it's been hamstrung by the decay of political speech and it's infantilized our national discourse. I can't go for that and I won't write that way.
