Metallica Book Chili Peppers, Bassnectar and More for Second Orion Festival

"We didn't know what was going to happen, but it was a blast – so we said 'Let's see if we can do that again.'" So says Lars Ulrich, the always-excitable drummer and co-founder of Metallica, explaining why he and bandmates Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield and Robert Trujillo are returning for round two of the Orion Music + More Festival – the annual gathering they've created and curated in collaboration with C3 Presents, producers of Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits – which made a successful debut last year in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Today, Metallica is revealing Orion's even more varied, adventurous lineup for 2013 – one that ranges from superstar co-headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers, EDM rave king Bassnectar, indie-rock heroes Japandroids and all points in between, when Orion arrives at its new venue, Detroit's Belle Isle, on June 8th and 9th.

Of course, the event wouldn't be complete without a titanic performance from Metallica: As such, Orion pulses with the pioneering metal band's DNA, right down its name, taken from the title of the epic instrumental at the center of Metallica's 1986 classic album Master of Puppets. For Ulrich, the Metallica ethos is embodied most in Orion's surprising juxtapositions, a tradition that commenced in the festival's 2012 incarnation, which featured the likes of Modest Mouse, Best Coast and Eric Church alongside more expectedly heavy acts like Avenged Sevenfold, Sepultura and Suicidal Tendencies. "Our idea was to bring North America the kind of festival experience you get in Europe, which is all about diversity and new experiences," Ulrich says. "When we first proposed this, people were like, 'Why isn't Metallica doing a metal fest?' That surprised me; we weren't interested in doing that. Admittedly, a lot of things we put together could've been weird, but we were stunned how people really vibed on it."

Metallica Feel Confident on Eve of Orion Festival 2012

Indeed, the new Orion bill goes even farther in its genre sprawl. Punk of various generations and dimensions proves more deeply represented than ever, slamming together hardcore forefathers FLAG (a conglomeration of original members from the groundbreaking Black Flag), Warped Tour faves Rise Against, Dropkick Murphys’ Celtic fury, Gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, and Midwestern garage rebels the Orwells and the Dirtbombs alongside SoCal mosh-pit anachronists the Bronx and FIDLAR. Those sounds are paired unexpectedly, meanwhile, with bold alternative acts like the Joy Formidable, Foals and Silversun Pickups and hip-hop iconoclasts Death Grips. Heavy music, meanwhile, is represented by a surprisingly challenging selection of artists, from Deftones' atmospheric grooves to experimental supergroup Tomahawk, Dillinger Escape Plan's complex mathcore, the contemporary thrash of Battlecross and the vintage stoner rock of Fu Manchu. "My girl [model Jessica Miller] turned me on to Fu Manchu – we've been blasting them in the car," Ulrich says. "And my son's been playing Foals' new record for months. It's just so cool to get people like the Chili Peppers and Bassnectar and Foals together. We just made endless lists of our favorite bands; we even reached out to Iggy [and The Stooges] – which would've especially highlighted the Detroit element – but he's got a gig in L.A. that day. If you saw our iPods, you'd see we live that kind of diversity in our day-to-day lives. We love heavy music, but we're music fans above all." Ulrich notes how Orion continues a grand tradition started when Metallica's late original bassist Cliff Burton would broaden the band's musical horizons early on in the band's career, exposing them to the decidedly non-metal likes of R.E.M. and Tom Waits. "We'd be listening to Simon and Garfunkel on the tour bus, and then go play 'Fight Fire with Fire'!"

The biggest change in Orion's focus is the addition of an electronic dance tent headlined by Bassnectar's speaker-shredding low-end, along with moombahton maven Dillon Francis, French club-kid combo Dirtyphonics and a massive dubstep contingent comprising Borgore, Datsik, 12th Planet, Adventure Club and Destroid. "For that, we have to blame our kids," Ulrich says. "Hetfield and I went with our kids to watch Skrillex at a festival we were both playing, and we were blown away by his presentation – he had 25,000 kids going insane. We thought, 'We've got to get that!'" Ulrich sees EDM as a natural addition to Orion, pointing out the links between the hard intensity of today's dance music and Metallica's genre roots. "A lot of those guys come from a background in heavy music, and you can hear it – Bassnectar is a huge metal fan," he says. "A lot of the rock fans might be skeptical, but when they see it’s about energy and unison, they'll relate to it."

And even if they don't, they'll still have Metallica – who, in another change, will only play one night, alternating the headlining spots with the Chili Peppers. As well, while Metallica graced Orion's debut with special sets that featured the band's signature records Ride the Lightning and the Black Album played in full, Ulrich isn’t sure that approach will be repeated in 2013. "It's the 30th anniversary of Kill 'Em All, so that would be an option, and it's also the 25th anniversary of . . . And Justice For All – but if you're in a band for three decades, you can find an anniversary for anything," Ulrich said, laughing. "We haven't made a decision, but if I was a betting man, I'd guess that us getting stuck playing an album in its entirety isn't going to happen." He also says not to expect any new material from upcoming releases: "We've been writing the better part of the last couple months, but we're taking it very easy. There are a lot of cool ideas and riffs – it's pretty rocking stuff – but we're still shaping it into songs." And a substantial preview of Through the Never – Metallica's upcoming 3D film blending concert footage and narrative concepts, due out August 9th – isn't likely either. "We just saw the first full cut two weeks ago," Ulrich says. "It's very unique and cool, but we're still honing the fine details. To be honest, paying for it ourselves, working by committee – it's a little overwhelming; it makes me appreciate making records more! But it's a motherfucker of a movie, and [lead actor] Dane DeHaan [who also starred in Lincoln, Chronicle and episodes of True Blood] is riveting onscreen. There's something about the looks of real movie stars – he makes us musicians onstage look dorky by comparison."

What Ulrich says to definitely expect for Orion 2013, however, is the same kind of "fan-friendly" intimacy that the first version held. There, Metallica's members would be frequently seen wandering around onsite, watching bands and personally introducing the artists they had an investment in bringing to the festival: Hammett gave Gary Clark Jr. a warm welcome well before he'd had his mainstream breakthrough, while Ulrich ambled onstage to give the Arctic Monkeys his blessing. "Introducing bands was the most fun part," Ulrich says. "Getting to introduce the Arctic Monkeys made me the cool dad of the year!" The second Orion will also be bringing back the memorabilia-stuffed Metallica Museum and exhibitions that highlight the individual members' interests, like Hetfield's Custom Car & Motorcycle Show, Hammett's cult-horror themed Crypt, Trujillo's skater-friendly Vans Vert Ramp, and Ulrich's Hit the Lights Film Tent. For his film tent, Ulrich hopes to have a special session "highlighting my favorite movie of last year, which just happens to be about a Detroit musician. Yeah, I'd love to do something with Searching for Sugar Man – doing it in Rodriguez's backyard would be especially poignant, and emphasize Detroit’s rich musical heritage. But I usually figure that shit out in the last week. Winging it is part of the fun!"

That casual attitude, Ulrich adds, is what gives Orion its distinctive edge amidst typical mega-festival fare. "We want an intimate atmosphere," he says. "When I did the film tent, it was like we were all hanging out in my living room. Instead of being one of these festivals that charges 50 bucks for a bottle of water, ours felt more like a giant backyard barbecue. That's the kind of feeling we want people to come away with."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers signed on to headline Coachella about an hour before the annual Indio, California, festival announced its lineup last night, one of the band's managers tells Rolling Stone. "We've been in talks for months," says Cliff Burnstein, whose firm, Q Prime, also manages Metallica, the Black Keys and other top rock acts. "It goes down to the wire. It's a negotiation."

The Peppers, who have played Coachella twice before, abruptly emerged as the Sunday-night headliner for both the April 12th and 14th weekends after weeks of rumors that the Rolling Stones would play the festival. But Mick Jagger earlier this week told NME: "We're not gonna do Coachella, 'cos it's too early. There was a rumor we were gonna do that one, but it's very early, Coachella. It's April or something, isn't it? And we're not gonna be ready to go by April. But we're not gonna stop."

Burnstein suggested the Stones' gross revenues for recent shows didn't square with Coachella's philosophy of "financial discipline" and "pricing integrity." (Last year's Coachella cost $285 for a three-day pass for dozens of bands, while, according to Pollstar, tickets for the Stones' four arena shows in North America last fall averaged $520.) "I heard the rumor, too," Burnstein says. "I discounted it, because I didn't think [promoter] Goldenvoice would pay the Stones' price. I mean, it's as simple as that."

Although the Peppers played the Coachella mainstage in 2003 and 2007, Burnstein says their current lineup, including two-year guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, gives renewed energy – the band's L.A. alt-rock radio play and Spotify numbers among young listeners are high for a veteran band. "We'll be right in the target demo for Coachella. It's surprising, but it's true," says Burnstein, who adds that the band plans to start writing a new album this year. "We figured out if they have 180,000 people over the two weekends, there's a good chance that 10 percent or less would've actually seen the Chili Peppers at a previous Coachella. It seemed like it would actually be, in many ways, a very fresh thing."

Coachella 2013 Lineup: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phoenix, Blur, Stone Roses

The Coachella 2013 lineup has officially arrived, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blur, the Stone Roses and Phoenix are all slated to headline the two-weekend festival in Indio, California this April. Among the other big names on the bill: Lou Reed, Postal Service, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, New Order and Wu-Tang Clan.

As in past years, several of the marquee acts playing Coachella are in the midst of reuniting, or at least resurfacing with new material. Both Phoenix and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are gearing up to release their first new LPs in several years this April, and earlier this week Postal Service confirmed plans to ring in their 10th anniversary with a Coachella set. The Stones Roses and New Order both kicked off reunion tours last year, and Wu-Tang Clan are at work on a new album to mark their twentieth anniversary. 

2013's Hottest Tours

Rumors about this year's Coachella headliners had been swirling for weeks, with the Rolling Stones and Daft Punk among the acts speculated to be performing at the festival. But last week, the Stones confirmed that they would not be playing Coachella, with Mick Jagger telling NME that the band would not be ready in time for the festival, despite the string of successful reunion dates they played in the U.K. and U.S. at the close of last year. And though Daft Punk have a new LP in the works, the band has reportedly told festival promoters they won't be hitting the road this year.

Coachella will kick off on April 12th through April 14th and reprise its lineup the following weekend, April 19th through 21st. Festival passes go on sale next Tuesday, January 29th, at 10 a.m. PST.

Chili Peppers Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer on 'I'm With You' Outtakes Set

Almost exactly a year after releasing I'm With You, their first album with guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will stagger the release of 17 unheard outtakes from those sessions over the next several months, both digitally and on seven-inch vinyl singles.

Beginning in August, the band will issue two songs at a time on nine separate 45s, with one exception: an eight-minute rocker captured in a single studio take that will occupy both sides of a single, as Klinghoffer told Rolling Stone from a recent tour stop in Berne, Switzerland.

"We're going to have to do that old trick where it fades out and fades back in on the B-side," he said of "In Love, Dying," one of the tracks Warner Bros. has not yet officially named. In June the label announced only six titles:  "Strange Man" b/w "Long Progression" (due August 14th); "Magpies" b/w "Victorian Machinery" (September 11th); and "Never is a Long Time" b/w "Love of Your Life" (October 2nd). (Below is an exclusive look at the first two of the set's nine forthcoming seven-inch singles jacket covers, which will interlock to form a puzzle designed by San Diego-based artist Kelsey Brookes.) 

"These songs were always sort of kicking around, and we always intended on putting them out in one way or another," Klinghoffer said. "It's not as much of a splash, but it's really all working out for the better. To be honest, there's certain songs that, when we initially came up with the sequence for the record, I was a little like, 'Hmmm, we're not putting that one on?'"

One of those included "Long Progression," which will serve as the B-side of the first seven-inch (it was sacrificed for "Goodbye Hooray" at the last minute). Another cut, "Victorian Machinery," "sounds like a big three-headed monster playing drums," Klinghoffer said, adding that the band captured "absolute magic" with "Never Is a Long Time," a "pop-tastic" number featuring Greg Kurstin on piano.

"It's really one of those cases where they had too many good songs to fit on an album," said Kurstin, who also played on 1999's Californication. "They have this cohesive thing in the studio – when they get that take, that's the take that they keep."

After joining the band in July 2009, Klinghoffer wrote and practiced with frontman Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith for almost a year before they recorded several albums' worth of material between September 2010 and the following February. Rather than release it all as a double album, as they did with their previous one, 2006's Stadium Arcadium, the group preserved the best of the outtakes for this collection.

"It's always difficult, but we use a democratic process and the songs with the most votes are usually the backbone of the album," producer Rick Rubin wrote in an email. "I can just say as is always the case, some of my personal favorites don't make the cut. I'm sure everyone in the band can tell you the same."

Klinghoffer said that the remaining 17 unreleased songs from the I'm With You sessions – they recorded 48, after all – could eventually see the light of day. "It's possible," he said. "We just had so much material back then that certain things just straight-up didn't get enough attention. There's a couple that will probably just remain in our iPods."

Meanwhile, though Klinghoffer said they have not written any official songs while on the road, he noted that the band demoed some material during Kiedis' recovery from foot surgery, which postponed their tour for two months earlier this year.

The outtakes collection will coincide with former Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante's latest efforts: his EP, Letur-Lefr, will be released on July 17th, while a full-length, PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone, will arrive on September 25th.

All of the band's records will be available, from their early albums Freaky Styley and Mother's Milk on through their blockbuster hits Blood Sugar Sex Magik and Californication to their latest album, I'm With You.

The Chili Peppers signed an exclusive deal with Spotify. The service, which launched last year in the United States, will be the only streaming service worldwide to feature the band's music.

Bonnaroo has officially confirmed that, as rumored, Radiohead, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Phish will anchor the 11th incarnation of the iconic music festival, which will take place from June 7th to 10th in Manchester, Tennessee. The above headliners will be joined by recent Grammy winners Bon Iver and Skrillex, a reunited Beach Boys and comedian Aziz Ansari. All told, more than 150 bands and nearly two dozen comedians will offer fans continuous entertainment on 13 stages over the course of four sleepless days and nights.

True to its formula, Bonnaroo's lineup breaks away from other major U.S. festivals who have often been accused of homogenous programming. This year, shock rocker Alice Cooper will join the party. So will rapper Ludacris. The festival will honor its jam band roots with performances from Umphrey's McGee, ALO and Dispatch, while also making room for electronic acts with sets by Flying Lotus, Major Lazer and Big Gigantic. Hardcore group Bad Brains will make their inaugural Bonnaroo appearance as will Spectrum Road, an all-star band featuring Cream's Jack Bruce, Living Colour's Vernon Reid, Carlos Santana's wife Cindy Blackman, and revered organist John Medeski.

Indie rock royalty will appear alongside current up-and-comers with sets by the Shins, the Avett Brothers, Foster the People, Feist, tUnE-yArDs, Little Dragon, Mogwai, Dawes and Alabama Shakes among many others.
When Bonnaroo launched in 2002, it imagined itself as a cross between Phish's homegrown parties in the Northeast and the New Orlean's Jazz and Heritage Festival in Louisiana. In fact, Bonnaroo organizers brought in some of the creative team behind Phish's events, while creating a format that was directly inspired by what they saw at the fairgrounds in New Orleans. In keeping with the spirit that the festival was built upon, when Phish finally performed at Bonnaroo, in 2009, they brought out Bruce Springsteen to jam.
But it's not only jam bands who jam at Bonnaroo –  collaborations are frequent and bands often feel free to take more risks than they might otherwise. A large part of that has to do with the vibe. Fans who make the annual pilgrimage to Tennessee tend to listen to bands, not hype. Multiple musicians seem to comment on this from stage every year and the band-fan respect is so high that it is not uncommon to see artists roaming the grounds and watching other sets from out in the field, when their own duties have been fulfilled.

Tickets will go on sale this Saturday, February 18th at noon ET, at bonnaroo.com.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Postpone Tour

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced that they must postpone their winter tour of the United States so that frontman Anthony Kiedis can recover from multiple foot injuries.

According to a statement from the band, Kiedis "recently underwent surgery to removed a crushed sesamoid bone and correct a detached flexor tendon in his foot." The singer is expected to make a full recovery in time for the rescheduled dates, which will begin on March 31st at the Amway Arena in Orlando, Florida.

The band's revised tour itinerary is as follows, with the original date followed by the new date.
