Snoop Lion and Major Lazer Host Raucous Bash in Austin

Snoop Lion performs at Viceland in Austin, Texas on March 14th, 2013.Griffin Lotz for RollingStone.com

When Major Lazer came out tossing vuvuzelas, you knew they meant business. Dull plastic toots bounced off the warehouse walls as hypeman Walshy Fire, DJ Jillionaire and Diplo himself emerged, the latter two clad in suit and tie. Over the next hour, the group spun a tight, twisted set at Viceland's SXSW headquarters, with Diplo even tumbling out into the crowd, Wayne Coyne-as-Bubble Boy style. It was a fitting, raving open for the night's main event: a live performance from Snoop Dogg's reggae reincarnation, Snoop Lion.

A performance from the rapper-turned-Rasta was enough to stoke anticipation, but Major Lazer made certain the packed crowd was sufficiently geeked. Their electro-dancehall specialty made up the set's foundation, and Jillionaire and Diplo spotlighted several new tracks from their forthcoming Free the Universe (out April 15th), including a premiere of "Get Free," complete with a cameo from Dirty Projectors' Amber Coffman. Amidst grinding synth and bass bomb drops, the duo sprinkled in hip-hop crowd pleasers like Juicy J's "Bandz a Make Her Dance" and deep cuts such as Beanie Man's "Girls Dem Sugar."

Q&A: Snoop Dogg and Diplo on Jamaican Inspiration and Bob Marley's Legacy

The accompanying stage show was fittingly, well, bananas. Dancers, confetti, an inflatable version of the Major Lazer cartoon: at one point Diplo even halted the show to point out not everyone had obeyed Walshy Fire's order: "If you're a real Major Lazer fan, take your shirt off!" Outlandish and indulgent? Sure. But as Major Lazer commanded the crowd to get low – which they gladly did – it became clear that some things in music haven't changed since the Isley Brothers instructed everyone to get a little bit softer now.

Up next was Kingston, Jamaica's Movado, a dancehall MC with a thick, punchy delivery that lagged behind the beats early on, while hook attempts fell a little flat. But atop a beat with a low, menacing horn riff, Movado found his comfort zone. Packed with all sorts of energy and towel-waving, Movado closed his set to cheers with spot-on rhymes that fell easily between big downbeats.

Then came the waiting game. With each new person cramming into the venue over the next half hour, the audience lost a bit more patience waiting for Snoop Lion to arrive. At one point, boos erupted, and when the reincarnated one finally took the stage to chest-caving snare hits, his voice sounded disconcertingly husked and tired.

That didn't last long, though. Moments later, as the beat dropped, the famed MC fell right into the zone he's inhabited over the course of his 20-year career. The night's purpose was to celebrate the emergence of Snoop Lion, reggae star, but that did not mean Snoop Dogg, hip-hop hero, was absent.

"Gimme some of my favorite drink, but with a little twist on it," Snoop quipped with a sly smirk as a beat built on reggae guitars and a grimy synth riff reminiscent of his Death Row days poured out of the speakers. A dubbed-up version of his classic "Gin and Juice" followed. For each new cut, including the blissed out "La La La" and a striving, euphoric track featuring Angela Hunte (a rising Brooklyn MC who showcased her quick tongue and pipes at the top of the show), Snoop breezed through old favorites like "Next Episode" and "Drop It Like It's Hot." The MC even tossed in a few sing-alongs on his favorite tracks for good measure, including Bob Marley's "Could You Be Loved," House of Pain's "Jump Around" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll."

Not a dull moment throughout Snoop's 80-minute set. While the mood mellowed after a performance of Reincarnated's latest single, the somber "No Guns Allowed," Snoop Dogg/Lion led the crowd in a reviving rendition of "Young, Wild & Free." The refrain was sung into oblivion, yet it never lost its simple joy. Twenty years on the job, it doesn't matter if he's Lion or Dogg – Snoop knows how to give great music to the masses.

'Reincarnated' Traces Snoop Lion's Rastafarian Awakening

Snoop Lion filming "Reincarnated" in Jamaica.

The marijuana smoke-filled opening of Reincarnated, the documentary chronicling the personal and spiritual evolution of rapper and one-time gangbanger Snoop Dogg to reggae artist and Rasta Snoop Lion quickly cuts to shots of a bonfire and singing.

The context isn’t revealed until near the end of the film, which screened Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival.

As Snoop’s journey to find out the source, struggle and meaning behind the peaceable Rastafari ideological movement unfolds, the fire scene reappears as part of a holy groundation ceremony at the Nyabinghi Centre in Jamaica.  It’s a significant moment: Snoop, who is given the name "Berhane" (which means light) during the baptism, has been embraced by true Rastas. "I feel love right now," says Snoop, beaming.

In the film, Snoop's daughter Cori B says her father comes home happier, smiling and singing Jamaican music. His forthcoming album, Reincarnated, made in Jamaica with executive producer Diplo and various producers and co-writers, is expletive-and-negativity free, something he could perform at an invitation to the White House. That wasn’t always, or ever, the case before.

The making of the reggae recording in Jamaica is the main reason Snoopadelic Films teamed with Vice Films for this documentary, directed by Andy Capper, but the context that led them to this surprising place in Snoop’s 40-year-old life is provided throughout the film. They hammer home the fact that Snoop grew up in Long Beach, CA, surrounded by violence, and the idea that this peace and love vibe was not in the cards, at least not musically.

"That was my first calling, out of the gangbanging and into the rap," Snoop says of that early stage of his life, which was reflected in his violent and misogynist lyrics.

Reincarnated reminds its audience of everything Snoop – born Calvin Broadus, Jr., and known earlier in his career as Snoop Doggy Dogg – has been through: acquitted of a murder charge; a record deal with Suge Knight’s Death Row; losing his friend 2Pac to an unsolved murder; the recent death of his best mate, rapper Nate Dogg, who died of a stroke last March.

"That’s what forced me to find a new path," Snoop says in the film, referring to Nate’s passing. A significant portion of Reincarnated is dedicated to the funeral service and procession.

But as he heads to LAX, bound for for Jamaica, Snoop plans to leave America for a month and "come back a whole new man." And he does.

The new path is shown gradually as Snoop and his entourage – as well as his family, wife Shante Broadus, and Cori B – head out on little adventures and fact-finding missions about the Rastafari movement and culture. From picking fresh herb deep in the Blue Mountain Range and visiting Trenchtown, the birthplace of the late Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer – who now, at 65, shares his wisdom with the rapper and and calls him "Snoop Lion" – to partaking in many "reasoning" ceremonies, where Rastas hang out and smoke cannabis, Snoop’s reincarnation unfolds. And in the end, he finally realizes a mission Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan gave him 11 years ago: "To be an advocate for peace," Snoop Lion says.

Snoop Dogg Launching Cigar Brand

snoop dogg Snoop Dogg performs at The Tabernacle in Atlanta.

Who knows smoking better than Snoop Dogg? The rapper is capitalizing on his infamous love for lighting up with a new line of cigars, Executive Branch, which he will unveil at the Coachella Festival when he headlines with Dr. Dre.

The cigars will be made with tobacco sourced from the Dominican Republic and the first round of product, the "Executive Branch Cigarillos," will be sold in packs of two for $.99.

"Throughout my career I have been lucky enough to travel the world and try all different types of tobacco products," said Snoop Dogg in today's press release (we assume dictated while winking very broadly). "During my travels throughout South America and the Caribbean, I was fortunate to encounter this tobacco company, Executive Branch and was so impressed by their commitment to quality . . . Throughout 2012, we plan on releasing new styles and flavors, in which I will be working with their team to make sure all products are up to Snoop Dogg standards."

Snoop's new product is considerably more legal than what he usually carries; just this week, he was arrested for marijuana possession.

Coachella Lineup 2012: Radiohead, Black Keys, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg to Headline

The Black Keys The Black Keys perform as part of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California.

After months of speculation, leaked lineups and hipsters spreading rumors "from friends," the Coachella 2012 lineup is out. As already widely reported, Radiohead are one of the headliners, closing out the festival's two Saturday nights (April 14th and 21st). The Black Keys, who've been predicted to appear as well, are topping the two Fridays, April 13th and 20th. But one headlining act no one foretold, at least that we saw, are hip-hop icons Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, wrapping up both weekends on April 15th and 22th.

This year marks the first time Coachella will expand to two weekends. While many have wondered how Goldenvoice would be able to pull off arranging matching lineup for both weekends, the promoters have come through with a classic Coachella talent roster. Every key ingredient of past Coachellas is represented on the 2012 edition.

Major dance headliners -- how about Swedish House Mafia, Kaskade, Justice, David Guetta and AVICII?

Reunions? Check, in the form of At the Drive-In, Swedish hardcore cult heroes Refused, Pulp, Mazzy Star and the postpunk group fIREHOSE. And the current crop of alternative stars are well represented, from Florence + the Machine and Bon Iver to the Shins and Miike Snow.

The celebrated veterans spot, which in past years has seen the likes of Leonard Cohen, is represented this year by Jimmy Cliff. Other highlights we have circled include Cat Power, Madness, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, St. Vincent, Feist, M83, Amon Tobin, Givers, the Weeknd, Nero, Santigold – in fact, too many more to count.
